Important Medicare FactsMedicare Facts

When you become eligible for Medicare, you have a 7-month open enrollment period to sign up for Part A and/or Part B. This open enrollment period works in monthly blocks. So in this case, do not think of your birthday as a fixed day within the month but as the whole month. Your open enrollment period begins 3 months prior to your birth month and continues until the end of 3 months after your birth month.
You are eligible to sign up for Medicare Part A and/or Part B (also called Original Medicare) during the General Enrollment Period that takes place January 1st – March 31st every year if you didn't sign up when you became eligible at 65 or if you aren't eligible for a Special Enrollment Period. Additionally, coverage will start on July 1st of that same year. You can enroll in Original Medicare online, by phone or in person through your local Social Security office.
If you sign up late for Medicare Part B coverage, you will have to pay a late penalty premium, in addition to your Part B premium, for as long as you have Part B, unless you meet certain conditions that allow you to sign up under special enrollment. Each full 12-month period in which you were eligible for Medicare Part B but did not enroll may increase your Part B premium by 10%.
Medicare supplement plans or Medigap can complement your Original Medicare coverage, but you must be enrolled in Part A and Part B to be eligible. Although exact coverage will vary, some policies will help pay for co-payments or deductibles, while other policies will cover additional services not covered under Original Medicare. Just like Open Enrollment under Original Medicare, there is a Medigap Open Enrollment period during which you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan. This begins on the first day of your Part B coverage and lasts for 6 months. You can otherwise enroll in a Medigap plan at any time throughout the year, though additional application requirements may apply.

Medicare Part F

Coverage under a Medicare Supplement Part F plan includes additional gap coverage for Part A and B coinsurance, deductibles, and excess charges, with additional benefits.

Medicare Part G

Coverage under a Medicare Supplement Part G plan is similar to a Part F plan. However, it does not cover the Part B deductible.
